Cold Blood

By Vivian Abrams

Once upon a time
there was a story to be told
and once again
this story, now a tale so very old
was passed by word of mouth
because the pages would be mold
and stiffened at the spine
where they meet and where they fold.

The trips to California on the lips of those who've heard
was once upon a time, and twice,
and thrice.

Back home in Pennsylvania
when the birds went south
they took everything along,

by word of mouth.
